WESTFIELD – American Red Cross Youth Council members will be hosting Halloween open house events for children on October 31, 2013 at Red Cross locations in Westfield and Somerville.
WESTFIELD — Gallery U Boutique in Westfield is planning a Halloween evening masquerade from 6-9 p.m. to celebrate the opening of its new exhibition “Something Wicked This Way Comes: Artwork Celebrating the Gothic and Beautifully Macabre.” All are welcome, and those who come in costume will have a chance to win prizes.
WESTFIELD — Township residents and church choir members Mary Lynne Nielsen (center) and Betty Webster (right) are two of the many devoted volunteers who help sort, organize and set up the Giant Book Sale at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield every year. Book donations are accepted starting on Friday, Oct. 18.
WESTFIELD-Charles Frederick Wallace gave us chlorination of water, so essential to public health. An engineer, he came up with a simple device that pumped small amounts of chlorine gas into local water supplies to rid them of bacteria and other pathogens. His first customer was the Jersey City water department, which in 1913 paid Wallace $150 for a chlorinator to sanitize the Boonton, NJ reservoir.

UNION COUNTY – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders invites residents to express their opinions and concerns regarding alcohol and drug abuse programs, in a series of public forums. The public input is part of the application process for the county to receive State of New Jersey funding for treatment and prevention.
KENILWORTH – Homefirst Interfaith Housing & Family Services will host “An Evening of Thanks: The 2013 Union County Family Service Awards,” on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 6-10 p.m. at Galloping Hill Golf Club, 3 Golf Drive, Kenilworth.
