Berkeley College scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors who demonstrate a high level of achievement in high school. Scholarships are renewable based on the recipient’s cumulative grade point average at the end of each academic year and continued enrollment as a full-time student.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY — Middlesex County Clerk Elaine M. Flynn encouraged homeowners who were part of a home foreclosure between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2010 to take advantage of a new review program being offered by the federal government.

The Independent Foreclosure Review program is being offered through the Federal Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Homeowners who were part of a foreclosure during that time period are eligible to request an independent review of their foreclosure process.

If the review finds that financial injury occurred to the homeowner as a result of errors, misrepresentations or other deficiencies in the servicer’s foreclosure process, the homeowner may be eligible for compensation. Where a borrower suffered financial injury as a result of such practices, the consent orders require remediation to be provided.

“If you underwent a foreclosure in 2009 or 2010, I urge you to take advantage of this process,” Flynn said. “This review will help determine if you suffered undue financial injury due to errors or other problems during your home foreclosure process.”

Under enforcement actions taken by the OCC, the Federal Reserve and the Office of Thrift Supervision in April 2011, 14 large mortgage services were required to correct deficiencies in their servicing and foreclosure processes and to engage independent firms to conduct a multi-faceted independent review of foreclosure actions that occurred in 2009 and 2010.

“I would like to thank the County Clerk for bringing attention to this program and for looking out for the best interests of our residents,” said Middlesex County Freeholder Blanquita B. Valenti chair of the County’s Community Services Committee.

“This program will help determine instances where our residents may have been mislead or faced undue costs during an already difficult time,” said Middlesex County Freeholder Director Christopher D. Rafano. “Helping to spread the word about programs such as this, is another way we can serve our citizens.”

Nationally, more than 4 million letters were mailed to potentially eligible borrowers with request-for-review forms and instructions on how to complete and return them. If you did not receive a form in the mail, you can request a form by calling 1-888-952-9105, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The form needs to be returned by April 30, 2012.

Flynn added: “You can begin the process today by completing a form and making sure to submit it by the April 30, 2012 deadline.”

CLARK — Fourth grade students at the Frank K. Hehnly School in Clark learned about probability under the direction of short term substitute teacher Jackie Grigoli. The fourth graders participated in a coin toss to determine the probability of flipping heads or tails. Students were asked to flip the coin 10 times, 50 times, and 100 times. The fourth graders were then asked to record their outcomes and compare the statistics. CLARK – Clark’s Township Council voted this week to move school board elections from April to November. The move will save money by reducing the number of elections held during the year, and it is hoped that the change will increase voter participation.

On Tuesday, Assembly Majority Lou Greewald (D-Camden) trumpeted the success of the new law he sponsored allowing school districts to hold their elections in conjunction with the general election in November. According to the assemblyman, 225 of New Jersey’s 538 elected school boards opted to make the switch.

“This idea has been talked about for decades but was always killed by inertia or the special interests,” said Greenwald (D-Camden). “By bringing all the stakeholders to the table and forging a compromise, we passed this major reform measure in a matter of weeks. Now, my solution is proving to be a quick and astounding success, with nearly 42 percent of the state’s elected school boards already making the move to November school elections. This truly remarkable momentum benefits both taxpayers and democracy and shows we can get things done when we work together for sensible reform.”

CLARK – Hygienist Maggie McLaughlin, of the Central Jersey Family Health Consortium, recently gave the kindergarten students of Frank K. Hehnly School, in Clark a presentation by as an introduction to their studies on proper dental care. The month of February is known as “Dental Health Month”. The students were introduced to healthy eating habits and proper dental care as part of their Healthy Living class taught by Linda Voros. CLARK — Fourth grade students in Mrs. Philippakos and Ms. Meredith’s fourth grade science class at Frank K. Hehnly School in Clark have been learning about magnetism. As a part of a science experiment each student was given a magnet and a cup with iron filings. The students were able to explore and discover how the iron filings were attracted to the magnet. All individuals arrested and charged with crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

Feb. 1 at 10:09 a.m. – In the vicinity of Broadway, Officer Christopher Tuccio arrested Newark resident Barry Masker, 35, and charged him with possession of CDS and possession of CDS paraphernalia. He was subsequently released pending a court date.

Feb. 2 at 6:56 a.m. – Officer Steven Francisco investigated a theft of items from a motor vehicle that was parked at a Gloria Street residence.

Feb. 2 at 10:16 p.m. – In the vicinity of 60 Walnut Avenue, Officer Kenneth Gaulette arrested Rahway resident George Scott, 37, on outstanding warrants from East Orange and West Orange for contempt of court. He was subsequently released after posting bail.

Feb. 3 at 1:25 p.m. – In the vicinity of Brant Avenue, Det. Antonio Manata arrested Irvington resident Frederick Jones, 60, on an outstanding fugitive warrant for robbery from New York, New York. He was subsequently transported to the Union County Jail awaiting extradition to New York.

Feb. 4 at 2:07 p.m. – In the vicinity of Broadway and Joseph Street, Det. Antonio Manata arrested Newark resident Vanisha McMillan, 38, and charged her with obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and numerous traffic violations with a total bail of $17,050. She was subsequently transported to the Union County Jail.
