A police officer was involved in a shooting in Deptford, New Jersey, at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday in a strip mall area near strip mall.

The incident began when two attempted shoplifting suspects, a woman and a man, allegedly fled from a T.J. Maxx or Marshalls with a suitcase full of stolen goods, tried to escape the scene in a black SUV.

The woman was confronted in the parking lot by a police officer, who may have been dragged by the suspect’s vehicle, after which shots were reportedly fired. Witnesses say the woman was shot.

Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Bernie Weisenfeld says police and prosecutors are investigating, but would not confirm if gunfire was exchanged or if there were any injuries.

There was no immediate word on injuries or arrests but an aerial camera showed a black SUV covered with a yellow tarp, stopped on a tree lined division in the parking lot on the 1800 block of Clements Bridge Road.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed they are investigating a police-involved shooting in Deptford Township.

Witnesses say security came after the couple, a police officer confronted them in the parking lot, and at some point, shots were fired.

Medics arrived and began working on the woman who appeared to be shot, according to witnesses who said that that saw broken glass and a police baton on the ground.
