Four people, including a 16-year-old boy, have been charged with murder after two men were shot on Sunday night inside a car in the parking lot of the Meadowlands racetrack in East Rutherford, Bergen County.
Police arrested Tariq Gathers, 24, Victor Geslicki, 19, Nyshun Morris, 19, and a 16-year-old male, all of Jersey City, N.J. in connection with the slaying.
The victims were shot on Route 120, outside the entrance to the racetrack shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday night. A state trooper on patrol heard the shots and chased the suspects, who got into a stolen SUV.
As the suspects fled, their vehicle collided with a concrete median before continuing to the adjacent Izod Center, where they were caught around 9:30 pm, according to police.
Police responding to the scene found the two victims, ages 21 and 22, still inside the sedan where they were shot.
The 22-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and the 21-year-old died after being transported to Meadowlands Hospital.
State police identified the suspects as Tariq Gathers (24), and Victor Gesilicki and Nyshun Morris, both 19 years old. The minor was not identified. All of the suspects are Jersey City residents.
All four were charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an illegal purpose, and receipt of stolen property.
The stolen car was towed from the scene. Neither the motive for the shooting nor the names of the victims were immediately known. Preliminary information indicates that the shooting was an isolated incident, with no threat to the public.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
