Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz will endorse U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders for President on Saturday, during an event at the city’s Flatiron Tavern.
Diaz, who attended a May 18, Sanders rally in Asbury Park, will formally announce her endorsement alongside leaders of New Jersey for Bernie2020 Larry Hamm, Patricia Campos-Medina Vice Chair and Barry Brendel, who is also chairman of Our Revolution New Jersey.
Staci Berger, of the Central Jersey Progressive Democrats, and two-time congressional candidate Peter Jacob are also expected to declare their support for the Vermont Socialist’s candidacy for the Democratic nomination.
Diaz endorsement will buck the Middlesex County Democratic Committee, and the entire state political establishment, which is uniformly supporting the presidential candidacy of U.S. Senator Cory Booker.
An invitation to the event, billed as the launch of the New Jersey for Bernie campaign, listed Diaz as a speaker.
Diaz, Perth Amboy’s first female mayor and New Jersey’s first Latina mayor, was elected in a 2008 landslide over then-incumbent Joseph Vas, who was also a state assemblyman.
She was re-elected with only 37 percent of the vote in a crowded 2012 field of six candidates and again in 2016, when she defeated three other contenders with 43 perecent of the vote.
The rally begins at noon on Saturday, July 13, at The Flatiron Tavern. Perth Amboy and organizers say everyone is invited!
