A 28-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran killed 12 people in a Los Angeles area bar full of college students about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said Ian David Long, 28, walked into the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., armed with a legally-purchased weapon and started throwing smoke bombs and shooting.
Long then took his own life with a .45 caliber handgun, Dean said. Police speculate that the murder was random.
Another dozen or more people were injured as patrons scrambled for cover as the chaos broke out.
Mass shootings have become common in America and citizens show little concern about re-electing politicians who tolerate deadly attacks as well as frequent individual slayings and suicides.
