American needs a free & independent press, despite Trump’s lies

More than 200 editorials nationwide on the importance of a free and independent press will appear.on Thursday, August 16, as newspapers heed the call sounded by Boston Globe op-ed page editor Marjorie Pritchard to speak out in opposition to President Donald Trump’s wearisome press-bashing.

Trump’s unrelenting attacks on the media have no foundation in reality.

The man has disgraced the nation by lying daily about matters great and small, including the facts about the criminal and counter-intelligence investigation being led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller.

For the record, Mueller was called in after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey and attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from participating in a case in which he could be a target or material witness, since he lied about meeting with Russians during the campaign.

Sessions met twice with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the 2016 presidential election, then failed to disclose either meeting when he applied for his security clearance and during his Senate confirmation hearings he said, “I did not have communications with the Russians.”

Sessions recused himself on March 2, 2017 from the Department of Justice’s investigation into alleged Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election and possible ties to Trump associates.

That put Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in charge of the probe, and in May he appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead the investigation.

For the record the FBI opened a counterintelligence investigation on July 31, 2016, after learning that George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, told Australian diplomat Alexander Downer, who he met in a London bar on May 10, 2016, that Russia was supplying  Republicans with dirt on Democrat Hillary Clinton.

On October 5, 2017, Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to making false statements to FBI agents about contacts he had with the Russian government in 2016 relating to U.S.-Russia relations and Trump’s campaign.

America’s newspapers and new media journalists challenge powerful corporations, hold policymakers accountable and mobilize millions of citizens to restrain dangerous forces uainf only logic, reason and facts.
