jazzville skyline: ‘…no school…’

“…no school…”

I was talking to a young person the other day, and he was asking me about vinyl records…

He was starting out his collection and knew that, back in the day, I once had over 9000 vinyl albums…

The conversation went along fine till he used THAT term…’old school’…

I immediately corrected him and said that there is no ‘…old school…when we were listening to vinyl, there was no school…it was music…’…And it was much more than that…

That 12×12 cover art was all about the music…the liner notes on the back to read as you listened to brilliant innovations in rock, pop, jazz, progressive, classical, soul, r&b, you name it…there was, and still is, nothing like a vinyl album…

And shopping for these pieces was a rapture in itself…going thru the old moldy containers and searching for a gem you always wanted or something you never even heard of but looked interesting…and always probably around $2.99 give or take…

Now…vinyl has made a comeback, which is very cool, but the companies are really trying to destroy it before it even gets started, with prices ranging around $30 a pop…not cool at all…

But there is a large community out there that still understands the brilliance of finding those treasures where they may…

You can check out alot of them on ‘youtube’, including videos by ‘Channel 33 RPM’, where Frank will take you thru his collection, his shopping jaunts with his two very cool girls, and even gets his wife in on the action by having her randomly pick out records from his collection to defend…Trust me, you will not only learn alot, but you will want to start, or restart, your own collection as well…

peace…
