“…could it be forever…”

David Cassidy…passed away…Those are words that I somehow never thought I would hear or say…

Sure…everybody passes…eventually…but that’s for ‘old’ people, not teen idols…Nevertheless…He has finally succumbed to his failing health issues at the very teen idol age of only 67…

And…for those of you who weren’t there when he was ‘there’, you almost couldn’t get much bigger…He was starring on the tv series ‘The Partridge Family’, singing more hits than you can count on any performers hand today…They released singles and albums, with hits like ‘Doesn’t Somebody Want To Be Wanted’, ‘Echo Valley 2-6809’, and of course, ‘I Think I Love You’…

Then they decided he could do concerts…and he did…He sold out the biggest arenas around the world, with millions of screaming girls (and boys) in attendance…There was no denying that the bubblegum pop of the ‘tv family’ music was confining the rocker that was deep within him…In fact…he once proclaimed that inside, he wanted to be Jimi Hendrix…

And so, when his solo albums arrived, many expected a harder sound, but, as record companies go, they knew that his major audience were still the ones who would buy ‘Cherish’ and ‘Rock Me Baby’…and they did…

One of his solo efforts, ‘The Higher They Climb’, tried to reach that rocker inside, but still was (mostly) pure David Cassidy nonetheless…

And it wasn’t until a concert in London when everything came crashing down…Thousands of young girls swarmed the stage, many getting injured, with one later dying…That hurt David so much, that he quit performing and turned to a darker place…

After a while, he regained his spirit, performing and recording, with fewer hits like ‘Lyin’ To Myself’ popping up here and there…Near the end, he developed dementia, but still performed only a few months ago at the legendary B.B.King’s in New York…

He is now gone…but all those t-shirts and lunchboxes and concert programs remain for those who grew up singing his songs and wanting to either be him or be with him….
