Niger faces humanitarian emergency

While few Americans know much about the African country where four US soldiers died after being out-gunned in an ambush, Niger’s humanitarian crisis is a hot topic among agencies working to secure peace and stability throughout the world.

Challenges stem from a chronic food and nutrition crisis, insecurity from Boko Haram attacks, internal displacement and the added strain on resources from hosting a large number of refugees from neighbouring countries.

Niger is also prone to epidemics and natural disasters, such as floods.

The country is one of the poorest in the world and suffers from an extremely high rate of child marriage and a high rate of maternal mortality.

UNFPA assists in the provision of sexual and reproductive health services and supports mechanisms to prevent and respond to gender-based violence.

The international humanitarian agency provides 15 service delivery points supported that provide clinical management of rape and supports 49 facilities that provide emergency obstetric care.
