In response to the first meeting of President Trump’s “Election Integrity” Commission, Diallo Brooks, Director of Outreach and Public Engagement at People For the American Way issued a statement saying, “The so-called ‘Election Integrity’ Commission was specifically designed to provide justification for making it harder for Americans, especially people of color, to cast a ballot. No doubt it will also attempt to manufacture justifications for Donald Trump’s repeated and demonstrably false claim that he only lost the popular vote after millions of people cast illegal ballots.”
The commission was formed in May, when Trump signed an executive order calling for a body that would “study the registration and voting processes used in Federal elections” with an eye toward “enhanc[ing] the American people’s confidence in the integrity of the voting processes used in Federal elections” and identifying “vulnerabilities in voting systems and practices used for Federal elections that could lead to improper voter registrations and improper voting.”
The kinds of restrictive voter laws supported by Republicans in the name of protecting election “integrity” are far more damaging to the rights of eligible voters than the nearly nonexistent phenomenon of individual voter fraud.
While activists like the commission vice-chairman, Kris Kobach, waste time and money trying without success to prove that illegal voting is a threat to democracy, their restrictive voting laws and procedures actually deny people the ability to cast their vote.
The commission is comprised of some of the most strident opponents of voting rights in America today,” said Brooks. “Let’s be clear: Restricting the right to vote is an affront to our values and our democracy. For a president who seems obsessed with tweeting about his intolerance for ‘witch hunts,’ Trump’s embrace of this delusional and debunked conspiracy of widespread in-person voter fraud—and his formation of this sham commission—is yet another example of his administration’s assault on all Americans who believe in fact-based decision-making.”
Brooks said People For the American Way helped led a #RespectMyVote rally in front of the White House with a broad coalition of national groups to protest the commission.
There is no evidence of even relatively frequent illegal voting.
People For the American Way is a progressive advocacy organization founded to fight right-wing extremism and defend constitutional values including free expression, religious liberty, equal justice under the law, and the right to meaningfully participate in our democracy.
Many critics feel the commission was only created to justify repressive laws that will hinder voting among populations less likely to support Republicans and to back up bogus claims made by Trump, who received 3 million fewer votes than his general election opponent.
Trump was the second Republican to win the presidency with fewer votes than his opponent in 16 years. President George W. Bush Jr. was declared the victor in 2000 after the US Supreme Court ordered Florida to stop counting ballots that might have put Vice President Al Gore over the top.
