The Union County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is investigating a fatal shooting around the 500 block of Nile Street near 5th Avenue, in the Peterstown section of Elizabeth.
Police officers and EMS responding to the scene around 3 a.m. found one victim, a 33-year-old male, in the driveway of his home suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter.. There were no other injuries reported.
Police are looking for the driver of an older model two-door vehicle that was observed leaving the area immediately after the shooting.
The prosecutor’s office offered few details in a Twitter post that simply said, “The Homicide Task Force has responded to the 500 block of Niles Street in Elizabeth on a report of a homicide. Details to follow.”
One neighbor, Angela, who declined to give her last name, told an NJ Advance Media reporter that she saw four or five police cars on the street early in the morning.
According to a published report, Angela said she didn’t know her neighbor and described the block as a “quiet area” where she lives with her 3-year-old daughter.
“This is a very quiet neighborhood. I don’t know why stuff is going on here,” she said. “I’m surprised.”
