In honor or World Sickle Cell Day, June 19th, Embrace Kids Foundation announced that The McCourty Twins Tackle Sickle Cell Campaign will be covering the full cost of college books for all Embrace Kids Scholarship recipients that have sickle cell anemia.
Last week, Embrace Kids announced it would cover the full cost of tuition at community/county college for all of their current patients.
Tackle Sickle Cell, launched in 2013, is a partnership between NFL stars Devin & Jason McCourty and Embrace Kids Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. They are among only 12 sets of twins in NFL history and are one of three active sets of twins that currently play professional football.
The proceeds from the campaign are used exclusively to provide college scholarships, emergency financial assistance and educational programming/seminars to families whose children have sickle cell.
Over the last five years, the twins have hosted multiple blood drives and fundraising events in their home state of New Jersey as well as the two cities where the twins play for their respective NFL teams.
“When we think about helping children with sickle cell, the goal is to assist them so that they transition to being young adults that are healthy, educated and that have future opportunities,” said Embrace Kids Executive Director Glenn Jenkins. “There’s no greater way to support the management of one’s own health and their future, then by providing them with educational support and funding. Providing scholarships and the actual books for college is literally the end zone for Tackle Sickle Cell.”
“When we started Tackle Sickle Cell this is the kind of direct impact we wanted to have, being able to help patients today and provide a better tomorrow,” explained Devin McCourty, safety for the New England Patriots. “Each milestone we reach encourages us push to accomplish more. We appreciate for the support Tackle Sickle Cell has received.”
“The relationship that we’ve built with Embrace Kids has been such a rewarding experience,” said Jason McCourty, Cleveland Browns cornerback. “To be able to impact someone’s life far beyond sports has been one of the best accomplishments we could have imagined. Education will be the key in providing future opportunities for these sickle cell patients and we’re so excited to support them.”
This year alone, Jason & Devin ran their annual free of charge football camp in their hometown and co-hosted three separate Tackle Sickle Cell events in New Jersey, a Blood Drive, a charity Bowling event and a 5K Run/Walk.
They also each held Tackle Sickle Cell fundraising events individually with Devin hosting a Casino Night in Boston and Jason hosted a Comedy Night in Nashville.
Embrace Kids Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit located in New Brunswick, New Jersey, just minutes from Rutgers University. Embrace Kids Foundation offers programs and support services for over 200 sickle cell families.
