Police have been trying to negotiate with a man barricaded in a Trenton home who exchanged gunfire with police, killing one person and injuring three officers.
A Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson said the shooting occurred as U.S. Marshals on a joint regional fugitive task force attempted to serve an arrest warrant at the home in New Jersey’s capital city at around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The officers reportedly entered the house, located in the 300 block of Centre Street in Trenton, just a few blocks away from the Statehouse, and the suspect opened fire.
The injuries of two Mercer County sheriff’s officers were described as minor wounds that are not life threatening. A third law enforcement officer who was shot is also reportedly released from a hospital.
It was not clear if the dead person was a bystander or someone involved in the standoff but the victim is not a law enforcement official.
SWAT teams and police have evacuated nearby homes where the barricaded man is holding police at bay, as armored vehicles began taking positions to help keep officers safe.
