In response to Middlesex County Sheriff Millie Scott’s aid to federal Immigration and Custom Enforcement officials who detained an undocumented immigrant while he was at the county courthouse, the Middlesex County Democratic Organization is under fire from anti-Trump candidates who are running against political insiders in the June 6 primary election.
Scott, a former Piscataway councilwoman, deployed officers to assist with a raid in New Brunswick by ICE agents who arrested a defendant who showed up at a sentencing hearing, received probation.
The sheriff was elected with support from the political faction backing gubernatorial contender Philip Murphy, the Middlesex County Democratic Organization, whose candidates are being challenged by insurgents from the Central Jersey Progressive Democrats.
“What ICE is doing to people and families is abhorrent,” said freeholder candidates Catherine Hunt and Atif Nazir. “It is made even more repugnant that Middlesex County law enforcement is cooperating with ICE to detain, and potentially deport, people. That is not the job our county law enforcement is supposed to do.”
“The gentleman in the March 31, 2017 incident was in our Courthouse at the time Middlesex County Sheriff Officers detained him,” said Hunt and Nazir.
“Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner recently asked ICE to stop arresting people at Courthouses. We shouldn’t have to ask Middlesex County Democrats to stop too,” said Hunt, a resident of Monroe.
“Freeholders should be on the side of the residents and voters of Middlesex County, not working with Donald Trump and ICE. The Freeholders – and Sheriff Scott – all say they are Democrats, but they are acting like Republicans.”
“They are not the progressives they claim to be; if they were, this would not have happened. Middlesex County should be a fair and welcoming place, where we stand up for each other and protect our neighbors from these raids. Instead, we have nothing but silence from our Freeholders while our Sheriff’s office is actively complicit in questionable federal actions,” said Nazir, a Piscataway resident.
Hunt and Nazir called on members of the freeholder board to be vocal in their opposition to the actions of the Middlesex County Sheriff Office, and to immediately adopt policies that prevent the county’s law enforcement officials from collaborating with ICE in the future.
The Central Jersey Progressive Democrats’ platform calls for local, county and state government to disavow the Trump immigration agenda and to adopt fair and welcoming policies, as outlined by leading civil rights and immigrant justice advocates.
During the campaign, Trump held up Goldman Sachs as a villain and symbol of the corrupt establishment.
Murphy is a Wall Street billionaire whose former partners at Goldman Sachs include Steve Mnuchin, who Trump named as Treasury secretary; Gary Cohn, Trump’s top economic advisor; and Steve Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist.
