Political media follows status-quo politicians and ignores ground breaking superstars, so voters often do not know their best choices, but lazy journalists are no excuse for citizens shirking their duty to pick the best candidates.
If running for governor were a college course, Democrat Lisa McCormick would get an A for her detailed plans to make revolutionary changes in the dysfunctional state government and Wall Street billionaire Phil Murphy would get an F for regurgitating the same guns and abortion campaign rhetoric his consultants have poll-tested and spit outfor every Democratic client that hired them since 1989.
Assemblyman John Wisniewski would be flunked for plagiarizing ideas from Republican Bob Franks and socialist Bernie Sanders.
But that’s not how campaigns are judged.
Instead, newspapers and bloggers are narrating the contest like it is a high speed race closing on a photo finish between Murphy and Wisniewski. And if that narrative is wildly untrue, the mainstream echo chamber may prevent anyone from learning about it.
Murphy is squandering millions of dollars pumping his name through every TV, cell phone, tablet and other device connected to an advertising outlet. Wisniewski is churning out emails as his paid campaign staff are generating AstroTurf events and cultivating the lie that he his anything at all that resembles Bernie Sanders.
But at the end of the day, it is not Phil Murphy’s job to stop lying to you about how much he cares about the middle class. It is not John Winsiewski’s job to stop pretending he’s not a longtime political insider who abused your trust to get rich.
It is not even Lisa McCormick’s job to wage a campaign that convinces you not to vote for someone who is going to lie or cheat you.
It is up to you to pick the best candidate, so think before you vote. Look at all 11 Democratic candidates for governor and stop playing the favorites.
You are voters with self interest, not contestants on a game show or teenagers at a pep rally. Use your brain or people who do not will make the decision to elect a New Jersey version of Donald Trump to hasten the end of the world.
