Police say no shots fired at Jersey Gardens

Chaos erupted after a chair thrown during a fight made a loud noise, and someone yelled ‘gun’ as people fled the Jersey Gardens Mall.

Police were searching the mall in Elizabeth, according to social media posts that could not immediately be confirmed by police. The mall was reportedly on lockdown.

Chaos and panic erupted after a large fight broke out at the mall, but city officials told ABC News there was no shooting in the mall, although that was the initial report that came in to them.

This was a fight only. During the fight, a chair was thrown creating a loud noise and someone shouted ‘gun’ which lead to the chaos.

A couple of people were reportedly injured as they sought to evacuate the mall.

There is gridlock in and around the mall between people evacuating and law enforcement responding.

Demond Cottman, 21, was shot dead and his 26-year-old brother, Shadi Cottman, was wounded in a shooting outside a Macy’s store at the Hamilton Mall in South Jersey as people lined up outside for shopping deals last month on Black Friday, the day after Thansgiving.
