Chromebooks are available for library users at the South Brunswick Public Library, 110 Kingston Lane in Monmouth Jct.
Popular at schools and universities, the Chromebook is an Internet-dependent laptop that starts up super fast (roughly 7 seconds, or a fraction of the time it takes to boot an older model Windows-based computer).
SBPL’s Chromebooks may be borrowed and used anywhere within the Library building and cafe, but may not be taken off the property.
A borrower may be as young as a Middle School student and must be in good standing regarding their library borrowing status. Librarians at the Information Desk will hold a borrower’s photo I.D. and library card; each Chromebook has a barcode sticker on it so that it can be checked out, just like a book. Just don’t take it home!
A Quick Start Guide is available when borrowing for new users who want some basics.
Chromebooks at SBPL cannot be reserved and are only available when not needed in the SMART Lab for Technology Classes. So, if you want to be sure you can borrow one just call ahead and ask about availability. Call 732-329-4000, ext. 7286.
If you haven’t heard of them before, Chromebooks came onto the technology scene about two years ago and are considered a laptop of a different breed. Instead of Windows or Mac, Chromebooks are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the cloud.
The obvious benefits of everything being saved on the Web (the cloud) is that you’ll have access to it from any computer, anywhere in your world.
