The Union County Democratic Committee will convene in a meeting Jan. 21 to select someone as replacement for former Assemblyman Joseph Cryan in the Legislature.
On Jan. 4, when he became Union County sheriff, Cryan vacated one of two Assembly seats representing the 20th district, which includes Elizabeth, Hillside, Roselle and Union.
The meeting will not be held in any of those towns.
Democratic Chairman and Assemblyman Jerry Green announced that the meeting will be held at the L’Affaire banquet hall in Mountainside.
Any vacancy in the Legislature shall be filled by the county committee members from the same political party as incumbent representing the municipalities that comprise the legislative district.
Cryan, who served in the Assembly since 2002, had to resign his seat to replace longtime Sheriff Ralph Froehlich, 83, died of cancer in August.
The district is also represented by Assemblywoman Annette Quijano.
Green said he wants the party to consider anybody interested in Cryan’s seat.
