Students at Franklin Elementary School in Rahway collected three large buckets of toys, which were donated to Toys for Tots and were able to help many children in Rahway get presents for Christmas.

Franklin School expressed thanks to all those who donated to the cause.

Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas.

The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks, whose efforts were so successful that, in 1948, Toys for Tots was launched as a national campaign.

The First Lady has attended a Toys for Tots sorting event in Washington, D.C. for the last six years, but this was the first year that President Barack Obama also participated.

The President used the occasion to make a point about breaking down gender stereotypes, placing traditionally-male toys in boxes marked for girls as he helped sort items for the program.
