Hunter shot and killed himself in New Jersey

A a 45-year-old Chesterfield man accidentally shot and killed himself in the head and neck while he was hunting geese with his father, authorities said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and his father was not injured.

Authorities said both men were properly licensed to hunt the birds, they were by themselves and had Canada goose decoys spread out in front of their blind.

The incident occurred at about 4:15 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area of West Windsor, New Jersey, but police have not disclosed additional details.

Police originally said the older man, in his 70s, mistakenly shot his 45-year-old son in the back of the head.

“Everyone is in shock, the father who was out there, the responding family members– it’s a very tight-knit family. The whole community is really shaken up by it,” said Lt. Matthew Kemp.

West Windsor police and the Mercer County prosecutor’s office are investigating, but Kemp says evidence indicates it was simply a hunting accident.
