RAHWAY — A City Council member was arrested after domestic violence incident in Vernon Township last week, Vernon Police Lt. Brian Jernick said.

Authorities say Vernon police officer Ronald Koumaras arrested 2nd Ward Councilman Michael Cox on July 27 at 2:28 a.m.

Cox was released on a summons and is expected to answer criminal charges in municipal court at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jernick said.

No weapon was involved, Jernick said so Cox was charged with simple assault under NJSA 2C:12-1, police said. Cox did not respond to a request for comment.
