Obituary: Maria “Mary” Garay, Rahway matriarch

Maria "Mary" Garay, 72, passed away at home on Sunday, surrounded by her loving husband, Charles J. "Carlos" Garay and other family members. Services are being adminstered by Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home and a Mass at the First Baptist Church of Rahway, on the corner of Elm and Esterbrook streets, will be held at noon on Thursday, March 13.

Maria “Mary” Garay, 72, passed away at home on Sunday, surrounded by her loving husband, Charles J. “Carlos” Garay and other family members. Services are being administered by Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home and a Mass at the First Baptist Church of Rahway, on the corner of Elm and Esterbrook streets, will be held at noon on Thursday, March 13.

Maria “Mary” Garay (nee Gomez), 72, of Rahway, peacefully passed away at home on Sunday, March 9, surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral service will take place on Thursday, March 13, at 11 a.m. from the Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home, 275 W. Milton Ave., Rahway, N.J. 07065, followed by a 12 noon Funeral Mass at the First Baptist Church of Rahway, on the corner of Elm and Esterbrook streets. Cremation will follow at Rosehill Crematory, in Linden.

Viewing is Wednesday, March 12, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., and more details may be found online from the Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home at www.lehrergibilisco.com.

Mary was born in Ozona, Texas, and moved to Rahway 54 years ago after marrying her husband, Charles J. “Carlos” Garay.

As a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she found no greater joy than taking care of and watching over the children and family, and will be missed by all.

Maria was a homemaker and an avid sports fan. She loved the Dallas Cowboys, Elvis, traveling with her husband, and being with family and close friends.

She was a former member of the Jayceettes of Rahway, and played many years with the Rahway women’s softball and volleyball recreation teams.

She was predeceased by her father and mother, Preciliano and Amadita (nee Rios) Gomez, and her daughter, Gloria Garay, who died in 1966.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Elena Colucci and her husband, Richard, and Melinda Garay; a son, Carlos Garay and his wife, Tara; six grandchildren, Rielle, Christina, Trinity, Ava, Gloria and Jordyn.

She is also survived by one brother, Antonio Gomez and wife, Lupe; niece, Diana; and nephew, Gilbert.
