ELIZABETH — Sunday night’s death of a 2-year-old Elizabeth girl is being investigated as a homicide, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Monday.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Sunday, emergency medical personnel responding to a 9-1-1 call rushed to an apartment on the 200 block of Westfield Avenue in Elizabeth to find an unresponsive Dayanna Orozco, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The girl’s death was ruled a homicide following an autopsy by the Union County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday.

The victim’s mother, Raquel Ramirez, 30, has been arrested and charged with third-degree aggravated assault in connection with injuries sustained by the young girl, with bail set at $50,000. The Elizabeth Police Department’s investigation into this matter is continuing, and additional charges in the case are possible.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the death of Orozco to call Elizabeth Police Department Detective Raymond Smith at 908-558-2000, Ext. 2017.

These criminal charges are mere accusations. Each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
