Freezing Cold Hash Run Returns Jan. 4

EDISON – Attorney Ken Vercammen is again organizing the annual “Freezing Cold Hash Run & Party” three and five mile group run, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014.

Tired of the same old neighborhood roads, traffic, bad drivers? Join the off-road runners for a great and unusual training run. See the swamps and wooded areas saved from development. The Rumson Hash House Harriers again return to the woods and marsh of Edison.

Hashing is not a race but a non-competitive group run which follows an off-road course laid out with baking flour. This is a complex and different course through woods, grass, swamp and marsh. It is suggested that runners wear old running shoes.

The fee to participate is $20, or $25 on the day of the event. In addition, runners are asked to bring a can food donation for the St. James Food Bank.

A post-run social will be held at the Green Derby Bar, site of the “on-on” brews.

I’m a hasher from North Carolina (though I am from NJ); hashing is an international activity with hundreds to thousands of kennels worldwide. Hashing is a blast but there’s a reason few have heard of it; it’s an underground, invitation-only affair for very good reasons. I can’t believe they allowed a newspaper story to run about the hash, unless this is a toned-down, vanilla r*n specifically organized as a public food drive. If not, bring your 12 year old sense of humor and leave your thin skin at home. Many hash “virgins” are so offended by our behaviors and drinking songs the first time they never return. Keep in mind, we’re a “drinking club with a running problem”.
