Elizabeth Man Charged With Murder

police-tape-200x67ELIZABETH — An Elizabeth man has been charged with stabbing a city woman to death in her home over the weekend, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Monday.

Richard Gill, 20, was arrested at his Atlantic Street home Sunday afternoon and charged with murder, felony murder, and burglary, with bail set at $1 million.

Shortly after 10 a.m. on Saturday, Elizabeth police officers rushed to a North Avenue apartment building on a report of an unresponsive female to find the victim, 50-year-old Sharon Serball, according to Union County Homicide Task Force Supervisor Michael Henn. Serball had been found on her bedroom floor by a relative and was pronounced dead at the scene, Henn said.

Following an intensive preliminary investigation, Gill was identified as a suspect and located.

A motive for the homicide has yet to be definitively determined, but investigators believe the defendant and victim were known to each other. Additional information about this case will be released as it becomes available, authorities said.

The investigation into Serball’s death remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with information to call Elizabeth Police Department Detective Thomas Koczur at 908-558-2048 or Detective James Szpond at 908-558-2041.

These criminal charges are mere accusations. Each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
