Benedictine Academy To Host 8th Annual Christmas Basketball Tournament

ELIZABETH—Benedictine Academy (BA) in Elizabeth, along with the Benedictine Academy Parents Association (BAPA), will host the eighth annual “Dr. Rosemarie Battaglia Christmas Basketball Tournament” at the school, located at 840 North Broad Street in Elizabeth, from Dec. 26-29. Girls’ varsity and junior varsity basketball teams from 13 New Jersey high schools, including BA, will compete for the championship title at the event.

The tournament is named after Dr. Rosemarie Battaglia, who coached varsity basketball at the all-female Catholic college prep Benedictine Academy from 1954-58. Battaglia is to be honored at the Christmas Tournament on Dec. 29 at 6 p.m. Her record while coaching at the all-female Catholic college prep high school was 36-4. The 1954-55 BA varsity basketball team was undefeated, with a 12-0 record. She has been inducted as a Hall of Famer several times including Benedictine Academy in 2004; the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in 1999; and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) in 1996.

Scheduled girls’ varsity and junior varsity basketball games are as follows:
Thursday, December 26:

  • Junior Varsity:
    • 11 a.m. – Benedictine Academy vs. David Brearley H.S. (Kenilworth)
  • Varsity:
    • 12:30 p.m. – Snyder H.S. (Jersey City) vs. David Brearley H.S. (Kenilworth)
    • 2 p.m. – St. Vincent’s Academy (Newark) vs. Ferris H.S. (Jersey City)
    • 3:30 p.m. – Mary, Help of Christians Academy (Haledon) vs. Immaculate Conception H.S. (Montclair)
    • 5 p.m. – Madison H.S. vs. North 13th Street Tech (Newark)
    • 6:30 p.m. – Benedictine Academy vs. St. Mary’s (Elizabeth)

Friday, December 27:

  • Junior varsity teams from Elizabeth H.S. and North 13th Street Tech will compete at 11 a.m.
  • Varsity teams from Lacordaire Academy (Montclair) and East Side H.S. (Newark) will play at 12:30 p.m.
  • Varsity consolation games will be played at 2 and 3:30 p.m.

Saturday, December 28:

  • Junior Varsity consolation game at 11 a.m.
  • Varsity consolation game at 12:30 p.m.
  • Varsity semi-final games at 2 and 3:30 p.m.

Sunday, December 29:

  • Varsity consolation games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Varsity 3rd place game at 12:30 p.m.
  • Junior Varsity Championship game at 3:30 p.m.
  • Varsity White Division Championship game at 5 p.m.
  • Varsity Green Division Championship game at 6:30 p.m.

All games will be played in the gymnasium of Benedictine Academy. Trophies will be awarded for Most Valuable Player and first, second and third place teams.

Benedictine Academy is a member of the NJSIAA (New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association). Admission to the BA Christmas Basketball Tournament is $5 for adults and $3 for children and students under 18. Food and refreshments will be available. Proceeds will benefit student activities and programs at the Academy. Members of the community, along with alumnae of Benedictine Academy, are invited to the tournament.
