RAHWAY – Mayor Samson Steinman will get a little help from Santa Claus at the City of Rahway’s 33rd Annual Tree Lighting on Friday, Nov. 29, on the City Hall Plaza, located at the intersection of Milton Avenue and Main Street, Rahway.
Following tradition, the celebration will begin at 7 pm and feature performances by the Rahway High School Band and Chorus. Santa will arrive by fire truck and, with the assistance of Steinman, will light the 50 foot tall living tree in front of City Hall. Immediately following families will be welcomed inside, where Santa will greet children of all ages in the courtroom. All are invited to bring cameras and take their own photos with Santa.
The festivities will continue at the Union County Performing Arts Center, 1601 Irving Street, with a free showing of the holiday classic Scrooge beginning at 8 pm. Based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, this 1935 black and white version stars Sir Seymour Hicks as the miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge. Hot apple cider will be served and holiday short films with The Three Stooges and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer will begin at 7:30 pm.
Additional activities are planned to take place on the Train Station Plaza from 6:30 – 8 pm, weather permitting.
There is plenty of free parking available in the City Hall lot. Free shuttle bus service from City Hall to the UCPAC and back will begin immediately following the tree lighting and be available to return movie-goers to the City Hall lot after the film.
