LINDEN — Police arrested two Union County men Thursday evening after investigating a report of shots fired near the intersection of South Wood Avenue and East 10th Street.

Ali Smith, 23, of Elizabeth, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, certain persons not to possess weapons, and discharging a firearm within city limits. James D. McRae, 28, of Linden was charged with hindering and driving with a suspended license.

The officers arrived on the scene at 6:22 p.m. on Nov. 21, where they were told that a suspect got into a 1999 Buick that headed towards Clinton Street. Traffic Investigator Peter Hammer stopped the suspect vehicle, which was being driven by McRae. McRae and Smith told officers that they heard gunshots and were trying to get out of the area for their own safety, authorities said.

Witnesses told police they saw Smith throw an object into bushes from a driveway, authorities said. When officers checked the driveway, they found two spent shell casings and a .40 caliber handgun loaded with one round in the bushes.

Smith’s bail was set at $150,000 cash, and McRae’s bail was set at $25,000 cash. According to police, no injuries were reported.
