calendarMONROE – Experience the sounds, customs and dances of India as the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission hosts its “Folk Dances of India” program at the Township of Monroe Senior Center in Monroe.

This free program is scheduled to be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Monroe Senior Center located at 12 Halsey Reed Road in Monroe Township.

The folk dances of India are an intrinsic part of Indian culture and are performed at festivals, wedding ceremonies and other celebratory occasions. Charismatic and exuberant, these dances have survived through the ages by way of actual performances, memory and song. The dances and accompanying songs vary from region to region due to differences in languages, traditions, clothing and dance styles.

“I commend The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission for making this program available to our residents,” said Freeholder Charles E. Tomaro, chair of the county’s Business Development and Education Committee. “Programs like this always attract residents because it’s nice to see history and tradition come to life.”

“Our Cultural and Heritage Commission fills a special role, connecting our residents to our history and culture through education and entertainment,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “I encourage you to check out their outstanding programming.”

Folk Dances of India is offered free of charge, however registration is required. To register and to request directions for this Folklife program, call the Commission, 732-745-4489. Persons with hearing impairments may call 732-745-3888 (TTY users only), or 711, the New Jersey Relay System.

The Township of Monroe Senior Center is a fully accessible site; an Assistive Listening System is available and will be in use during the program. An American Sign Language interpreter can be provided without charge with a two-week advance request.

The program is funded in part by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. It is presented by the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the Folklife Program for New Jersey in partnership with the Monroe Township Patrons of the Arts, Inc. and Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission.
