CLARK — The students of Miss Sinicropi’s fifth grade math class at Frank K. Hehnly School in Clark are being introduced to an essential geometric skill which allows an NBA player to sink a three pointer and an architect to design a stable bridge: angle measurement and estimation.
After learning about what angles are and where they can be found in everyday life, students were asked to use geometric pattern blocks to explore the ways in which shapes interact to form varying angles. They also discovered the ways shapes can be combined to form larger shapes, and angles using their knowledge of triangles, and the geometric pattern blocks as shown above.
Then students were introduced to the different types of angles as well as precise angle measurement using protractors. This basic skill, combined with an underlying knowledge of angles, will aid students in solving geometry problems in future academics and various real world problems.
