STATE – Last week, New Jersey voters re-elected nine county sheriffs who also earn state pensions, according to a New Jersey Watchdog report.
Among them are Union County Sheriff Ralph Froehlich, who makes a $142,728 salary on top of an $85,295 pension, and Middlesex County Sheriff Mildred Scott, who earns a $129,950 annual salary and a $61,248 pension.
According to New Jersey Watchdog, 17 of 21 county sheriffs earn a salary while collecting retirement benefits from the state’s pension system. The practice is legal, under New Jersey law.
