PARAMUS – Police discovered the body of Richard Shoop inside a construction zone within the Westfield Garden State Plaza shopping mall at approximately 3:20 a.m., hours after panic started when a gunman reportedly fired one or more shots with a rifle.

Shoop, 20, was apparently killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to reports.

No other injuries were reported. Officials said that gunfire panicked shoppers and employees shortly before the Paramus mall’s 9:30 p.m. closing time last night. It is unclear how many shots were fired; officials originally told the media that a single round was fired, but witness reports suggest multiple shots.

Shoop was a pizza deliveryman from Teaneck. Police raided his home at around 1 a.m.

The mall, the largest in New Jersey, will remain closed today.
