LINDEN – Commander William “Bill” Murphy, the senior naval science instructor for Linden High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program, has passed away, according to an announcement from the school district.
Murphy, 63, apparently set himself on fire and died on the bike path between the Delaware River and Route 29 in Kingwood on Monday morning. He was already dead when rescue workers arrived at 9:45 a.m., after a passerby reported seeing a man on fire, according to Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III.
The Hunterdon County Medical Examiner will determine the “exact cause and manner of death,” according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
Although Linden public schools are closed this week, counseling support is being made available to all students and staff through this evening. In addition, Linden High School and the Academy Building will be open tomorrow for support and counseling, according to the district.
“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Commander Murphy’s family at this time,” a statement from the school district said.
