NEW BRUNSWICK —State Theatre will present The Shanghai Ballet’s original four act romantic ballet The Butterfly Lovers on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 8 p.m. The ballet tells the classic tale based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, combining elements of both Western and Chinese dance. Tickets range from $27-$57.
The Shanghai Ballet has held a prestigious position in the Chinese ballet circle since 1979, with their first North American tour taking place in 2002. The Shanghai Ballet has been in major dance competitions all over the world, winning dozens of awards. The company has also performed another folk-styled ballet called A Sigh of Love, choreographed by Bertrand d’At. Their repertoire additionally includes Swan Lake, La Sylphide, Don Quixote, and many others.
Xin Lili, the Artistic Director of the Shanghai Ballet, created and choreographed a version of the Chinese legend The Butterfly Lovers, which premiered at the Shanghai Arts Festival Closing Ceremony in 2001. Lili has won several awards including the 1987 silver medal at the New York International Ballet Competition, and the First Grand Prix for Classical Dance at the Paris International Dance Competition in 1988. In 1993, she was announced as one of the Shanghai Top Ten Young Artists.
