I grew up most of my childhood life in Union Township in the Vauxhall section of Union in the early eighties. I went through the great union education system Washington school, Central Six (Now Central Five) Kawameeh Jr High and graduating from Union High School in 1993 before moving on to college.
I remember how a vibrant town Union used to be and how there was a vibrant Union Center with many different stores to shop at. Taxes were low and there was transparency with the voters. I have a connection with Union which goes back to my childhood. The last 15 years I have seen some changes in Union, some positive and some negative.
I would like to improve the standard of life in Union and here are some of my ideas! I would like to bring in some businesses to Union that will be an asset to the people of Union like a Starbucks and Panera Bread. I would like diverse restaurants in the center of town and different stores that people off all kinds can enjoy. Bring outdoor dining to Union Center and on Springfield Avenue in Vauxhall.
I think the addition of the shopping center in the area is good for the residents in the area. I would like to get more business to invest in the area so the residents of Vauxhall can have places to dine close to their homes. I would like to work with the school board to improve Union High School.
I’ve spoken with many residents of the town and they have many concerns with the quality of the high school in recent years. I would like to cut wasteful spending, stop paying outside friends of the township our tax dollars while we have people who work for the township who can work on the things of the town like mowing the library grass instead of paying outside contractors $7,000 a year to do it.
Transparency to the voters, to be held accountable to the voters of Union and to keep an open dialog with the peoples issues and concerns. I would also like implement last year’s candidate Chris Hackett’s idea to work with Kean University to integrate their events with our town.
We have had one party ruling for the last 15 years and we need someone with fresh ideas to balance the power structure like our founding fathers envisioned and not have a one party system. My background work experience with businesses I believes prepares me for the challenges ahead. I’ve worked for AT&T Wireless corporate offices, Google in NYC and California, Novartis in East Hanover and BlackBerry in the US and Canada.
I ask the voters to Vote for Ron Wilburn and my running mate Jack Hackett for Township Committee on Nov. 5 for a positive change in Union.
Ron Wilburn is a Republican candidate for Township Committee in Union.
