ISELIN – The Woodbridge, New Jersey Metro Chamber of Commerce named John P. Szeliga, Verizon’s external affairs field director, as its 2013 Citizen of the Year at its 49th annual Chairman’s Awards Dinner on Oct. 16.
The Chamber selected Szeliga for its highest honor based on his leadership and service to the Chamber and to the community at large. Szeliga, a nine-year Verizon employee, manages external affairs activities for the company in seven counties across central New Jersey and is an active member in the community.
“I am humbled and grateful to the Woodbridge Chamber of Commerce for bestowing this award on me,” said Szeliga. “The Chamber is a valuable asset for the local business community, and I am honored to be associated with it.”
Szeliga currently serves on the board of trustees -Monmouth Ocean Development Council; board of trustees – Prevention First; the board of trustees- Dottie’s House; the board of trustees- Monmouth Ocean Foundation for Children; the Infrastructure Advisory Committee FEMERA/BRAC Fort Monmouth; the CentraState Hospital Government Affairs Committee; chairman of the board of trustees – The Jersey Shore Partnership; the Monmouth County Workforce Investment Board; board of trustees – Woodbridge Metro Chamber of Commerce; board of trustees – Greater Princeton Chamber of Commerce, 2nd Floor Advisory Committee of 180 Turning Lives Around; board of trustees of the Somerset County Business Partnership; the Monmouth County Chairman of the Citizens Campaign; the NJ Corporate Stewardship Council; and the Corporate Wetlands Restoration Committee.
Post Sandy, Szeliga has represented Verizon on the Department of Homeland Security – Office of Emergency Management Critical Infrastructure Communications Sector Committee for New Jersey.
Also recognized at the annual business networking event were several other business leaders and organizations including James O’Keefe, Joseph Gulino and Peter Barcellona, from Northfield Bank; Thomas Ploskonka, Avenel Fire Company No. 1; and Jack Cerulo, posthumously.
Szeliga and his wife, Carrie, live in Spring Lake.
