STATE – It’s decision day for New Jersey voters, who will choose between Newark Mayor Cory Booker and former Bogotoa Mayor Steve Lonegan in a special election for the final 15 months of the late U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s term.
Booker, the Democrat with name recognition, has led every poll, but conservative Republican Lonegan believes he can win an upset victory.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, but low turnout is expected.
Today’s special election could serve as an indicator of New Jersey voters’ feelings on the partial government shutdown and debt ceiling crisis that started because House Republicans demanded a delay of President Barack Obama’s signature Affordable Care Act health insurance reform program.
