RAHWAY — The owner of a Rahway chimney service company has been charged with accepting a large deposit from a client but then failing to perform any work, marking at least his third such offense in the last three years, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Friday.

Rodney MacQuirk, 47, of Rahway, is charged with third-degree theft by deception.

MacQuirk recently took a $750 deposit from a 64-year-old Rahway woman with the understanding that his company, Sweepers Chimney Service, would perform work on her chimney, according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Ann Luvera, who is prosecuting the case. When the promised work was not completed, MacQuirk was arrested for the second time in two weeks following consecutive offenses, Luvera said.

MacQuirk was on probation for a 2011 conviction on a charge of theft by deception at the time of his most recent arrests. He was lodged in Union County Jail earlier this week, with bail set at $10,000 by state Superior Court Judge Robert J. Mega.

Authorities are asking any other potential victims in this case, or anyone with more information about MacQuirk’s activities, to contact the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Special Prosecutions Unit at 908-527-4673.

The charge against MacQuirk is merely an accusation; he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
