RAHWAY — Raymond A. Giacobbe, Jr., of 439 Harbienko Court, was appointed as the Sixth Ward’s new representative when the City Council held a special meeting Tuesday immediately after Rahway Democrats offered his name among three contenders for the spot.
Giacobbe, 34, was nominated as councilman to replace Mayor Samson Steinman, who resigned from the governing body when he was named to his current position following the unexpected departure of embattled former Mayor Rick Proctor.
Members of the Rahway Democratic Committee also put the names of Redevelopment Agency Chairman William Rack and Sally O’ Brien into nomination, complying with state law that requires the party organization to recommend three potential candidates.
Giacobbe was appointed by unanimous vote at the special council session called for the purpose of filling the vacancy. He then joined the eight other council members planning the agenda for the next regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Steinman, as city council president, served as mayor from the time Proctor resigned until he was appointed to the job on an interim basis. He will now serve the remainder of Proctor’s term, which ends on Dec. 31 of next year.
Steinman has indicated his intention to seek election to a full term as mayor next year. He has been the chairman of the municipal Democratic Committee since Proctor left that position during his first year as mayor.
The new councilman, a Rahway High School graduate, is co-owner of Power & Fitness Health Club on St. Georges Avenue and married to Laura Giacobbe.
