Benefit Raises Money For Cooley’s Anemia Foundation

SpanoFundraiser-having-a-good-timeROSELLE PARK — On Friday, Sept. 13, at 6:30 p.m., the Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Loreti Council #3240, together with the Spano Family, hosted a Spaghetti Supper Benefit in memory of Michael B. Spano. It was held in Church of the Assumption’s Loreti Hall, 113 Chiego Place. Proceeds benefited the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation. DJ and entertainment was by Goumba Johnny. There were door prizes and raffles.

Over 130 adults and children filled the hall that evening to honor the memory of Michael Spano. John Sialiano aka Goumba Johnny, WKTU & radio Host @ Party 105.3 was the entertainment for the evening, spinning the tunes and doing comedy to everyone’s delight. Michael Biagio Spano was a lifetime resident of Roselle Park and Class of 2000. He was born with Thalassemia Major, a rare blood disorder. In 2003, at the age of 21, Michael passed away unexpectedly. He is dearly missed by his family, friends and all who knew and loved him. This dinner was a way to celebrate his life, on the 10th anniversary of his passing. Michael loved to eat, laugh and live every day to the fullest, which is why the Knights and the Spano Family created this evening of good eats, fun and laughter…and to raise money for a good cause.

Thalassemia Major commonly known as “Cooley’s Anemia” is a class of genetic blood disorders, most of which require regular blood transfusions and aggressive management of chronic iron overload – the predominant cause of early death. The Cooley’s Anemia Foundation’s mission is to increase life expectancy and enhance the life for those afflicted by this disorder. They do so by funding medical research to advance treatment and curative approaches, by supporting and advising patients and their families and advocating on their behalf and by educating medical professionals and the general public.
