Union County College Sports Teams Continue To Enjoy Success

CRANFORD – The Union County College Women’s Volleyball team continued their climb in Region XIX of the Garden State Athletic Conference with their win against Passaic County Community College on Thursday, Sept.  26. The Lady Owls began with captain Briana Mekoba (of Roselle) winning the coin toss earning Union the first serve. Union served very well on the night with over 25 aces total during the best of five series.

Union went ahead in the first game and kept their momentum, taking the first game with a score of 25-20. Game two saw Union on top with a score of 25-13. In the third game Union lost to Passaic with a score of 25-13. This quelled Union for only a brief time before the Lady Owl’s struck back in the fourth game by winning the third games by a score of 25-21.

Some notable statistics included Briana Mekoba contributing with eight aces, five solo blocks and four kills. Courtney Ortiz (of Roselle) had a kill and five solo blocks. Team captain Lena Fagan- Nelson (of Roselle) brought 10 kills and a service ace. Freshmen Lanyse Castro (of Elizabeth) had eight kills, four aces, and a solo block. Freshmen Samantha Sielski threw in two kills and five service aces. Shannon Santiago (of Roselle) had a kill and five service aces. Freshman setter Kianna Burrell (of Elizabeth) contributed with four aces and two kills.

The Women’s Volleyball team will host Bergen Community College on Saturday, Oct. 5, at noon in the gym at the college’s Cranford campus. All are welcome to attend the game. If the Lady Owls win this game they will be the 2013 Garden State Athletic Conference champions.

Union County College Men’s Soccer Team defeats Brookdale Community College

Union County College’s Men’s Soccer team defeated Brookdale Community College by a score of 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 1. Patrick Costa (of Union) scored one goal on a free kick. The other goal was scored by David Zorrilla (of Elizabeth) in overtime by a cross from Diego Lopes (of Elizabeth). The Men’s team is currently 8-5-1.
