UNION COUNTY — State Senate President Steve Sweeney launched an attack on Tom Kean Jr. with a mailer pointing to the Senate Republican Minority Leader’s votes against women’s clinics and a millionaire’s tax.
Last month, the Democratic State Committee also sent out a mailer attacking Kean over his opposition to Sweeney’s gun control bill, which was conditionally vetoed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie, that would have overhauled the way the state issues firearm permits.
The two lawmakers do not have a good relationship, which reached a low point this summer when Sweeney temporarily stopped placing Republican-sponsored bills on the state Senate’s agenda for consideration.
Kean has said that Republicans have a good chance of taking control of the upper house of the state Legislature in the November elections and has been aggressively promoting Sweeney’s Republican opponent, Niki Trunk.
Democrat Michael Komondy of Basking Ridge is running against Kean.
