NEW BRUNSWICK – James Cahill has been collecting a $99,735 pension since 2011 while serving as New Brunswick’s mayor, according to a report by New Brunswick Today.
Under current New Jersey law, a newly-retired government official would not be allowed to collect a pension while serving in an elected office, according to the report. However, when Cahill retired from his position as an attorney for the Middlesex County Joint Health Insurance Fund, the practice was permissible.
Cahill, a Democrat, earns a $40,000 annual salary as New Brunswick’s mayor, which is considered a part-time position.
