CRANFORD — Union County residents will have an opportunity to see and hear candidates running for the three open seats on the Board of Freeholders at a League of Women Voters forum at 8 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Cranford Municipal Building, 8 Springfield Avenue.
Taking part will be Linda Carter, Sergio Granados and Betty Jane Kowalski, Democrats, and Mark Krauss and Philip Mark Martini, Republicans. Ira Geiger, the third Republican on the freeholder ticket this year, has indicated he will be unable to attend but will send a statement to be read for him.
The format for this year’s forum has been changed from the traditional practice of statements from each of the candidates, followed by questions from the audience. Instead, the League has invited reporters from The Star-Ledger and Home News-Tribune to question the candidates on current issues. Audience members will still have an opportunity to pose questions following the segment with the reporters.
This year, the program is being arranged by the League of Women Voters of the Union Area. Sydelle Hirsch and Michelle Cerrato-Mannino, voter service co-chairpersons for the Union Area League, will serve as facilitators. They asked those planning to attend to arrive by 7:40 p.m. so that the forum, which will be televised locally, can get started on time.
Candidate forums are among the civic services provided annually by League members. League units throughout the county take turns making arrangements for these events. They also conduct voter registration prior to all elections.
