RAHWAY — Did you know that the average 80-pound student should not be carrying more than 8 pounds in his or her backpack on a consistent basis? This is just one of the many useful “Backpack Safety” tips recently learned by students at Franklin Elementary School in Rahway.

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, fifth and sixth graders were visited by physical therapist Jason Fogu from Kessler Rehabilitation Center located in Westfield. Coordinated in conjunction with the school nurse Barbara Maher, the assembly focused on the importance of using backpacks properly.

“Too often I hear students complaining about neck and back pain. Hopefully this assembly will help prevent future injuries,” said Maher.
