RAHWAY — Members of the City Council selected Samson Steinman as the interim mayor, replacing Rick Proctor who unexpectedly resigned after moving out of the city.
Steinman had been acting mayor in his capacity as City Council President since Proctor quit on Sept. 10.
The governing body unanimously chose Steinman from a group of three nominees, which also included former Mayor James Kennedy and Hilda Judah, submitted by the city’s Democratic Committee.
Steinman’s selection creates a City Council vacancy representing Rahway’s 6th Ward, which may be filled when the Democratic Committee meets on Oct 8.
Steinman is employed as executive director for the Union County Performing Arts Center, a non-profit organization that operates out of the former Rahway Theater and the newly constructed Hamilton Stage. He previously held positions in the Linden city treasurer’s office and as a state Motor Vehicle agency administrator.
A Rahway High School alumnus, Steinman earned baccalaureate and post graduate degrees from Pace University in New York. He served as a member of the Board of Education before he was elected as a city councilman in 2004.
