ELIZABETH – Safe and secure schools are vital to a successful learning environment. For the Elizabeth Public Schools, “Safe and Secure Schools” is now also a national award-winning publication. Elizabeth Public Schools won two Awards of Merit and two Awards of Honorable Mention in the 2013 National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) Publications and Electronic Media Awards Competition.
The competition recognizes outstanding education publications, e-newsletters, and electronic media and is open to all public and private schools throughout the country. Publication and electronic media entries are judged on excellence of graphic layout and design, writing, content, professional quality, and overall excellence. Some of the categories for the competition include annual reports, calendars, print newsletter and newspaper, special purpose publication, marketing material, and excellence in writing.
The brochures for which the Elizabeth Public Schools were awarded are “Safe and Secure Schools,” “Among America’s Best High Schools,” “Achieve Excellence – A 2012 Review,” and “Your High School Selection Guide 2013.”
The “Safe and Secure Schools” brochure, an Award of Merit winner, highlights the safety and security measures that are currently in place at the Elizabeth Public Schools, district protocols for various emergency events, and tips for parents to follow in the event of an emergency situation at their children’s school.
“Among America’s Best High Schools,” a second Award of Merit winner, illustrates the growth in student performance and instructional rigor at the high school level over the past several years. Two of the district’s six high schools, Elizabeth High School and Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy, were featured in the brochure for being ranked among the best high schools in the state and nation by The Washington Post, U.S. News and World Report, and Newsweek & The Daily Beast.
Both “Safe and Secure Schools” and “Among America’s Best High Schools” were awarded in the special purpose publication category.
An Award of Honorable Mention recipient in the annual report category, “Achieve Excellence – A 2012 Review” reflects upon the many great accomplishments of the Elizabeth Public Schools in 2012, including a record 331 perfect scores achieved on state assessments, the undefeated season of the Elizabeth High School football team that ended with a state championship, and the state and national titles won by the Elizabeth High School Marching Band.
“Your High School Selection Guide 2013” contains overviews of each of the district’s six high schools that include course studies and requirements. The brochure garnered an Award of Honorable Mention in the marketing category.
Elizabeth Board of Education President Tony Monteiro is proud of the awards as he believes they represent the high level of commitment the Elizabeth Public Schools has made to engage the Elizabeth community. “Keeping our community aware of the great successes taking place in our classrooms and the excellent services the district provides is vital,” said Monteiro. “Both of those aspects of communication help strengthen our partnership with the Elizabeth community, which by extension helps strengthen the education of our students.”
