ELIZABETH — The Union County Homicide Task Force and the Elizabeth Police Department are investigating the stabbing death of an Elizabeth resident, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Thursday.
Anthony Carter, 26, was pronounced dead at Trinitas Regional Medical Center Thursday morning.
At about 12:20 a.m. earlier that morning, Elizabeth police stopped a vehicle that had been seen driving erratically in the area of 1st Street, according to the investigation. Three people, including a seriously injured Carter, were found in the vehicle, and he subsequently was rushed to the hospital, authorities said.
A subsequent investigation revealed that Carter had been stabbed during the course of an altercation that had taken place earlier at a nearby sports bar and lounge.
This remains an active investigation. No arrests have been made thus far, and a motive for the stabbing has yet to be established, Park said. Anyone with information about Carter’s death is being asked to call Elizabeth Police Department detectives James Szpond or Raymond Smith at 908-558-2000, Ext. 2041 or Ext. 2017, respectively.
