NEW BRUNSWICK — A city man was arrested today and charged with killing a 26-year-old man, who apparently was stabbed in a boarding house where they both lived, Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced.
Devonte Scott, 21, was arrested and charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in the death on Sept. 24 of Evan J. Morgan, 26, of New Brunswick.
Scott, who was arrested today at 9:45 a.m., is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick lieu of $1 million bail.
An investigation by Detective Kenneth Abode of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Jose Rodriguez of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined Morgan was the apparent victim of a stabbing.
The results of an autopsy by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office were not immediately available.
The investigation began when police were dispatched to the boarding home on Baldwin Street in New Brunswick on September 24, 2013 at 8:17 p.m.
They arrived to find the victim had been injured. He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. on Sept. 24.
Police subsequently apprehended Scott at an undisclosed location.
The investigation is active and continuing. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Detective Abode of the New Brunswick Police Department at (732) 745-5200, or Investigator Rodriguez of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3300.
As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Scott are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
